Scholars of intellectual debate in mid-late 17th century French society have dubbed the "Arnauld (1612-1694)-Malebranche (1638-1715) Debate" one of the great intellectual events of the century, and both men were Catholic priests. Denis Moreau writes that "From 1683 to 1694, a long and furious polemic took place between Malebranche and Antoine Arnauld. When the debate began, Malebranche was still a â€oeyoung†philosopher (The Search After Truth was published in 1674), identified by the public as one of the leading lights of the new generation of Cartesians. Antoine Arnauld (1612- 1694), on the other hand, was an â€oeold†thinker, known mainly for his theological (rather than philosophical) writings" (from The Malebranche-Arnauld Debate).Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
